Teachers and parents play a role in improving school nutrition

Some research has been released, showing that nutrition at school can be improved by getting children to eat healthier, and to involve parents, teachers and school administrators.

In this study, food and beverage rewards in class were replaced with non-food prizes, and as well, healthy catering at school events and classroom celebrations was implemented.  Fund-raising events involving health options actually made more money than popcorn and pizza.

Unhealthy foods and beverages consumed by students at the schools involved in the study, decreased by 30 per cent. Healthy lunches brought from home and other sources also increased.

School is an ideal place to establish lifelong healthy eating habits.
