How to maintain your marbles as you get older

Healthy brain nerve connections as you age, may be a key to retaining intelligence later in life.

Older people with robust brain wiring, process information quickly. White matter in the brain has nerve fibres that connect different and distant brain areas.

As we age, a deterioration of white matter is likely a significant cause of age-related mental decline, but more importantly, intelligence is not found in a single part of the brain.

With new understanding of how the brain functions, we can work out why mental faculties decline with age in some people and not others, and to look at what can be done to improve our mind’s chances of ageing better.
