Ric's Blog: A question of 'change'

Posted by: By Ric Ditchburn, Magic 1278 | 3 February, 2009 - 10:46 AM
Ric Ditchburn: Magic 1278 presenter and blogger Another week has passed and it?s time to hit the old keyboard. Firstly I must apologise, once again to those of you who sent a reply to my previous blogs.

For some reason, we weren’t able to see them or display them for you to see.

Anyway, it’s all fixed, and we can now blog happily together.

I had occasion yesterday to take a very quick tram ride down St Kilda Road.

Normally I would walk from the city back to work, but I was running late and the weather was humid and sticky (excuses, excuses).

I jumped on the tram and had to wait behind a man at the ticket machine, while he fossicked in his pockets for some change.

He needed $3.70, and he clearly didn’t have enough. He asked the people in the next seat if they could change $10 for him. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Not only did they not offer to help him, but they just sat there and said and did NOTHING! Just like he was invisible!!!

He then turned to me, getting desperate to change his $10. I explained to him that I couldn’t change the note, but I was happy to give him the three dollars change in my pocket, which I promptly stuck it in the machine, added his 70c, and bought his ticket.

You should have been there to see what happened next.

This charming, well-dressed  man, (obviously of Indian descent), was falling all over himself, trying to get me to take his $10 note, telling me that he was embarrassed and offering to take me for a cup of coffee. I laughed and said that I would love to have a coffee, but I was late for work and it would have to be another day. He thanked me another 50 times and then waved me goodbye as I jumped off the tram.

I bet you’ve done a similar thing, probably recently, and I bet it made you feel good as well.

Tell me your story.

Cheers Ric

Blog comments Your Say

  • Ric, I love your show - you make me laugh all the way home each night - I swear some drivers must think I am crazy because I am in the car alone, laughing and singing along with you. Please keep up the good work. I have to agree with Terry Clarke too - I hear you at 5.30 in the morning, just before Anne and Kevin as well as weekends.
    Regards,

    Terri

  • This story is just the opposite. While in queue to buy a train ticket, I was confronted by a young man, very unkempt, asking me if I would give him money to buy cigarettes. My response may have surprised him, as I was offered considerable abuse for rejecting him along with words to the effect that it is people like me who make life harder for those like him. hmmm I wonder how this works. I am still wondering...

Everytime i turn my radio on , it is you that i hear you as the presenter. don,t you ever go home? I don,t mind because i think you are the best and most down to earth presenter on radio right now . keep up the great work.
