Blog: Ric's take on insurance
Greetings once again devoted readers of the blog.
You know I got to thinking about insurance the other day.
It's a funny old thing insurance. I reckon it's like playing Russian Roulette.
You take your chances and roll the dice.
I for one don't have health insurance. I have the car covered and I have a contents policy on the house. I don't have building insurance because I don't own the house. I belong to the RACV just in case I break down, but I don't have life insurance because, quite simply, I can’t afford it.
You could quite easily spend a whole lifetime paying insurance and never making a single claim.
If you didn't pay insurance on anything at all, you would save a fortune.
You take your chances and you roll the dice.
There is a huge debate going on at the moment about whether the good folks devastated by the bush fires should get any financial assistance to rebuild their houses if they didn't have insurance.
To me, it's no contest.
This was no ordinary event.
The thousands and thousands of people around Australia and the world who have donated millions and millions of dollars, would not have given a minutes thought to how that money was distributed.
All they wanted to do was help. Help in any way they could.
Two points:
- If everyone had insurance cover there would be no need to donate money to help. They would have been covered.
- If everyone had insurance cover it probably would have brought the insurance companies to their knees.
Never again will these people ever have to face an event like this.
Who could have ever imagined an atomic bomb going off in your street?
Destroying everything you ever owned and killing those you loved.
Let’s forget the bickering and the debate about who should get help and who shouldn't
Let’s just be kind, loving, compassionate human beings!!
Let me know if you agree.
Cheers,
Ric

I think one of your comments is a little out of whack. Just remember we had an event called 9/11 which didnt bring the insurers to their knees to i doubt whether a bush fire which was significally smaller than 9/11 would do that. Notwithstanding, if people want to rely on Govt assistance then they take their chances and everyone else take insurance. I certainly do so i dont have to reply on the Govt as they dont get much else right

I am not taking sides. I maintain my insurance on all I can afford to. I do tyhink they should have some cover BUT I do not believe the average insurance would cover everything totally! You are probably right it may have sent some company's broke. (May yet!)

Hello Ric, I agree with most of what you had to say about insurance. We live in The Dandenong Ranges and would not be game to have no house or contents cover. I understand that some people just cannot afford to have insurance and I did not hesitate to donate money to the Bushfire Appeal. I also make a yearly donation to our local Fire Brigade. I suppose you could say that I am covering all bases!
I'm listening in at the moment and heard you mention that your last child will be fleeing the nest shortly. Good luck. A new phase in your life is about to begin. You will miss the kids but it sounds like you have a fabulous relationship with them and will still be a big part of their lives....especially if you keep the toolbox well stocked!!

I have to agree with Lyn. Ive paid insurance all my life. I'm 51.I don't like it, but as my Father used to say "Its a necessary evil!" Still it seems cruel to forgo money to uninsured people. However I feel for for all those who paid up their insurance only to watch those who did not get the same money.Anyway love your show Ric.
Keep up the good work.
