KEVIN AND JANE'S KITCHEN

We ask you to share some of your favourite kitchen hints – the little tricks and techniques you’ve developed to make life easier while you’re cooking and cleaning up. Here are some of the terrific suggestions we received:

JAN

LETTUCE:  To keep your lettuce fresh, wrap in newspaper and keep in the fridge, it will last up to 2 weeks.

HELENE

EGG RINGS:  Don’t use egg rings to fry a perfect-shaped egg.  Cut a ring of capsicum (any colour although I prefer red) and crack the egg into it. You’ll love the yummy taste combination and there are no annoying egg rings to wash up afterwards!

CLAUDINE

ONIONS:  Here’s how to avoid crying when you cut up onions : light the gas stove and cut the onions nearby. It’s amazing – there’s something about the gas flame that dissipates that eye-watering onion odour.

CHERYL

ONIONS: To avoid crying while you’re cutting up onions, keep the onions in the fridge until you’re ready to peel them.

MARY

EGGS:  To make sure your hard boiled eggs don’t crack while cooking, use a thin skewer to carefully prick a small hole in the tip of the shell before boiling.

JANE

JEX:  After using a Jex to clean your saucepans, put it in the freezer to use next time, makes it last for ages. No more rusty steel wool.

NOEL

DISPOSABLE SPOON REST & STORAGE:   I use the lids of egg cartons as spoon/spatula rests on the stove. They absorb oil and grease and you don't have to wash them when they are dirty, just throw them out. The bottoms of the cartons can also be used. The larger (15-egg) carton lids are also useful for resting oil and sauce bottles on in the kitchen cupboards. You can cut them at the corners to make the lids completely flat.

CHRIS

STORAGE:   Instead of getting oil and sauce rings on the shelves in your pantry, place clean flat styrofoam meat trays on the shelf and store your bottoles of oil on etc on them.  When they get dirty just replace with new ones.

ELAINE

LEMONS:  To get the most juice out of a lemon, bring it to room temperature, roll it under the palm of your hand on a flat surface, then squeeze. Heaps more juice!

WINE:  Freeze left-over wine in an ice cube tray, then it’s ready to be added to your cooking when required.  It’s particularly handy for casseroles and pasta sauces.

POTATOES: Put an apple in a bag of potatoes to stop the potatoes from budding

LYN

BANANAS: Keep bananas fresh by storing them in the fridge in a ventilated Tupperware container completely lined with butchers paper.

DARLENE

JARS: To re-use a jam jar and eliminate any existing odour, pour in strong black coffee, let it stand for a few minutes, then rinse out. Odour gone!

ROBYN

OVEN CLEANING: Clean your oven, bench and most kitchen surfaces with a simple solution of 1 teaspoon bicarb soda and 1 teaspoon vinegar, mixed with boiling water. It’s safer, cheaper and more effective than chemicals!

PAT

OVEN LIGHT REMINDER: Put the overhead stove light on when you are cooking. We all get distracted and do other things from time to time, but by looking over to the light, you’ll instantly be reminded that there’s something cooking. Look at the stove before you leave the house and … you’ll never have that awful “did I leave the stove on?” moment while you’re out!

GEORGIE

FREEZE IT: Wrap smelly food waste – like seafood bits – and store it in the freezer until bin night. You’ll stop your outside rubbish bin from smelling awful during the week.

VAL

GARLIC: Get rid of that garlic smell from your hands by wiping them on the stainless steel sink. Stainless steel kills garlic odour!  (You could use a piece of stainless steel cutlery if you prefer – but the sink works just as well).  And to clean your stainless steel sink, wipe it with bleach, leave for a few minutes, then rinse. Sparkling!

RICE:  For lovey dry rice, put into cold water and bring to the boil.  Turn off heat allow to stand 10mins.  To strain, put clean tea-towel over saucepan and leave to stand.
