Oasis Horticulture, a wholesale seedling grower often uses biodegradable pots that will decompose in the compost, instead of using plastic pots.

You can also find jiffy pots which are compressed peat material which you soak in water so they swell up and you can plant cuttings and seeds so the roots will grow through the peat.

You plant the pot directly into the ground so reducing transplant shock.
