They are so commonly grown, because they are so tough.  Flowering over summer, in blue and white, Agapanthus Praecox is the South African lily.

There are other evergreen and deciduous types, much less aggressive and worth looking out for, especially the dwarf varieties.

Tip
Cut off the flowers once finished and the stem right down into the foliage, to stop seeds spreading.
